Alkali Arts was founded by Calgary multidisciplinary artist and designer Michelle Atkinson.
Before moving into a full-time art practice, Michelle spent more than 20 years in graphic design, building brands and creating visual communications for organizations across sectors.
Her art practice now explores environmental data, material, perception and the ways complex information can become physical, emotional and human.
Michelle’s background in design means she understands the realities of working with organizations: objectives, audiences, stakeholders, budgets, timelines and execution.
But Alkali isn’t a design studio.
Its creative process comes from her fine art practice — research, experimentation, material exploration and the freedom to follow an idea somewhere unexpected.
That combination allows Alkali to move comfortably between the studio and the corporate environment without treating one like the other.
And the practical understanding required to turn an idea into something that exists in the real world.
Michelle’s work has moved between public art, corporate commissions, exhibitions, participatory experiences, sustainable objects and large-scale installations — often bringing together artists, designers, fabricators and technical specialists to realize the idea.
Alkali operates the same way.
Michelle leads the creative direction, assembling collaborators and production partners according to what each project actually requires.
Because the goal isn’t to make every project the same way.
It’s to find the right way to make this one.
